It is always summer at the Butterfly House and Aquarium in Sioux Falls, SD.
The butterfly flight room is open year round and is kept at a constant 80 degrees. I would be visiting a lot during the winter.
The tropical plants and flowers are so pretty in the flight room, but the fluttering butterflies make it so much more fun.
There are hundreds of butterflies, which makes it feel like you’ve entered a tropical paradise.
{This is part 4 of a 5 part series about must-do activities in Sioux Falls: Washington Pavilion, Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum of Natural History, Outdoor Campus, Sertoma Butterfly House & Marine Cove, and Falls Park}
You’ll want to be careful where you step because there are butterfly all around, including the walkways. The butterfly house is home to over 800 butterflies in the 3,600 square foot space. There are knowledgable volunteers and staff available to answer questions.
The Butterfly House and Aquarium is also home to the only sting ray and shark touch tank in a 600 mile radius. The only other nearby touch tanks are located in Denver, CO andChicago, IL.
In addition to the touch tanks the marine cove houses thirteen saltwater and freshwater tanks with everything from vibrant colored fish to sea horses (gotta love the seahorses—so cute!)

More About The Aquarium
A home to thousands of species, coral reefs are one of the most biodiverse environments on the planet. They also serve as fish nurseries, providing protection, food and shelter for young scaly swimmers.
The Aquarium Gallery displays hundreds of different species of fishes and corals in over 10,000 gallons of aquariums. From coral reefs and anemones, to seahorses and tangs, our saltwater exhibits are home to marine life from the Indo-Pacific region to the Caribbean.
More About The Butterfly House
The Butterfly House is home to tropical butterflies from around the world. They begin their journeys at butterfly farms and once they form their chrysalides, they travel to their new home with us where they emerge as beautiful butterflies.
You can also have butterflies eating from the palm of your hand with a purchased feeding flower.
