Brandi Carlile- ‘Give Up The Ghost’ Review

Brandi Carlile’s third album, unveils her talents in their truest form. After 2 albums and non-stop touring, she has let her guard down and offers her most candid recording to date. If the phrase “give up the ghost” most often refers to death or dying, it can also be used to describe the passing of stages in life, of transformation.

What an amazing musician. I LOVE this CD…absolutely love it. I’ll admit, I must have been living under a rock the last few years because I hadn’t heard of Brandi Carlile before, but I am so glad that she’s been introduced to me. The music, the lyrics, the whole package is wonderful. To make a great CD even more wonderful she partners with Elton John for Caroline, the 6th track on the CD.

It’s been a totally unique experience for us. As some of you know, we recorded The Story in under two weeks, where as this record took more than a year. They say that it takes you your whole life to write your first record and then you have to write your second in a matter of months.

Well if this is so then to give up the ghost is to make a transition from one life to the next and transcend time in order to grow. This is to say that the songs on this record are time travelers instead of glimpses into the present and onto the road.
Wow it’s a terrifying thing to finish a record and know that it’s in the world. I can’t lie, this record like everything real, has come with real struggle. It was intense and we grew musically, and closer as a band. We’re more than happy in our new space. This record breathes life into our art and forces us to leave ourselves behind…to give up the ghost.”

How much do you love her statement that “to give up the ghost is to make a transition from one life to the next and transcend time in order to grow.” That will give you something to think about :)

As an artist I can definitely understand the fear of releasing your work to be heard by others–it’s a daunting task, but at the same time I love that it has pushed her as an artist and that Give Up The Ghost was the result.
