The other night a couple girlfriends and I made the drive to Traverse City (about an hour away) to see Away We Go. An incredibly wonderful movie about a couple traveling across the U.S. looking for a place to call home. All three of us loved this movie. I would tell you more about it, but it really is worth the time to go see. I’m quite picky about movies, but this one was worth the effort.
In addition to this being a great film, it was being shown at the State Theater. This was my first visit to the State Theater and it was a real treat. This is how movie going is meant to be, how it was a long time ago before everything was commercialized. I wish I would have taken my camera so I could show you how wonderful it was. [Edited to add: found a photo on their website--yea!]
You buy your ticket outside at the little ticket window. The lobby is small and the concession stand takes up a good portion of this, but they have some yummy popcorn and on Tuesdays the popcorn is FREE. The entrance to the actual theater is adorned with deep, rich red velvet curtains that are pulled back. We walked into the theater and a million stars lit up the ceiling. Oh my…..{swoon}. When the movie begins the stars are dimmed and the the red curtains at the entrance are closed. It is quite the experience going to a movie at the State Theater and if you are ever in northern Michigan I highly recommend it.
A bit of background info on the State Theater. For years it has been closed…just sitting downtown and going to ruin. Then producer/director Michael Moore decided to start a film festival in Traverse City (which is a great event as well). To my knowledge, he was the mastermind behind the revamping of the State Theater.
Do you have a theater near you that you love???
