As I was sipping my cup of coffee this morning and looking out the backyard, which is in serious need of baling mowing, I told Alan we should consider fencing off the back half of the yard and get either 2 goats or 2 sheep. My thought was we would never have to cut that part of the yard again. Now, mind you, we live in a subdivision that is backed up to Wal-Mart (another story for another time) and only have 1 acre. This is about a 1/3 of my backyard (didn’t have the wide angle lens on and was too lazy to go get it). I’m standing on the deck here and what you see beyond the fence is stupid Wal-Mart. Used to be trees and wildlife, now its a big ole ugly buidling..ok..sorry..it still grates on my nerves.
Anywho, back to my question. Alan asked me what we would do with all the animal waste. Um,,,hmmm,,good question. Guess I didn’t think that far ahead. Could we sell it?? Can you use sheep or goat manure on gardens?? I don’t know, this is all new to me. Then he asked me what the purpose of the animals would be. Well, duh, if you have sheep you could sell the wool to spinners or knitters, goats (if I could handle it) could be milked for goats cheese or goats soap. So really the problem isn’t the purpose of the animals its what we would do with all the shit.
So, I need ideas and suggestions. Please leave me a comment and let me know what you do at your farm/homestead. Remember, we are working with just one acre of land.
Thanks!
