Spa Day & Menopause Chat

Getting older has it’s benefits, but, if you are a girl, there is also a bit of a downside as well. I’m going to be 43 soon and I’m kinda starting to dread the M word. You know the one, right?? Menopause, yeah, THAT M word.

I thought I would take my Mom and Em out for a spa visit and we could discuss menopause in all its glory. Oh, joy! Well, the spa part would be a lot of fun, but sometimes ignorance is bliss and I wasn’t sure I was ready to know what path I was headed down.

We decided that we all wanted facials and then Mom & I had our hair cut and styled and Em had a makeup application. We arrived at the spa bright and early for our 9 a.m. appointment. Em & I had been up since 5 a.m. since it was a 2 1/2 hour drive to meet mom and we were really looking forward to a little relaxation.

First up, facials. Oh, lovely, lovely. It’s a little slice of heaven having a facial. So relaxing and wonderful. I had forgotten that facials, at this spa, includes a nice foot and arm/hand massage (note to self–shave legs before next facial). According to my esthetician I have very healthy skin with great elasticity. I was thrilled to hear that.

After our facial it was time to have our hair done and, for Em, a makeup application. If my nails were in better shape I would have added a manicure to our visit as well. However, my nails are a hot mess right now from home projects and playing in the dirt.

Post Spa Visit

We followed up our spa visit with a nice lunch where I broke out the M talk. I was SHOCKED to learn that my mom started menopause at 42–holy crap!!! That is my age. I hope that doesn’t mean that I’ll be dealing with it any time soon. Ack. We discussed other ailements that accompany menopause, and I have to admit, it doesn’t sound like a lot of fun. I told Mom I was stocking up on Poise Cooling Clothes and Poise Cooling Gel that I found at Walmart. Hey, it pays to be prepared.

These are found at Walmart in the feminine products aisle. They have now taken up a spot in my linen/medicine closet as well. You can read about my shopping trip here.

MenopauseNote to self: organize closet!

I’m hoping that my friends and I go through menopause at the same time so that we can have a nice support system. I’m not anticipating it to be awful, but it’s nice to have friends that understand.

I don’t hear a lot of conversations about menopause amongst woman and I want to be sure to keep the lines of communication open between Em & I, which is why she was there for the talk as well. She may as well know what to expect when she is older.

Poise offers five different products that help woman cope with the symptoms of menopause. I can only image how much more advanced products will be in 30 or 40 years when Em is dealing with it.

Current available items from Poise:
Poise Roll-On Cooling Gel
Poise Body Cooling Towelettes
Poise Feminine Wash
Poise Panty Freshener
Poise Personal Lubricant

By the way, September is Menopause Awareness Month. It’s a great reminder to chat with a “flashy” friend or relative about what to expect and tricks to dealing with symptoms. Word is that hot flashes are the worst…gotta say I’m not looking forward to that. If you are going through menopause or are past that stage, please leave a tip on how to deal with hot flashes. I have my cooling gel & towelettes available, but please share any other advice.

I was about 46 when the “signals” started and no one told me my cycles would be heavy and every two weeks. I was never so happy to get it over with and be done. It’s WHITE pants all summer long for me and no looking back! Whoo Hoo! Not much for hot flashes either. Even though I battle other health stuff, I am very lucky Mother Nature was easy on me. It’s a piece of cake! …and a stash of chocolate…and some key lime pie…and strawberry cheesecake…and some great wine…whatever gets you through is my motto. LOL!
