Em and I tend to eat a light lunch around 1130 or 12 each day. It’s usually a sandwich or some fruit. I seldom take much time to cook up a gourmet lunch. Working from home still puts a bit of constraint on my available time. Since our lunch is so light we usually end up having a snack around 330 or so when Alan gets home. I find that a good healthy snack around that time holds us over until dinner, which is usually around 7 p.m.
Making sure we all eat a healthy snack is sometimes a challenge. It’s easy to open a bag of chips or throw a pop tart in the toaster, but it’s definitely NOT a healthy choice. We have found two new things that are perfect for our afternoon snack: popcorn or smoothies. Either of those choices are perfect. Popcorn if we are in the mood for something crunchy and salty; smoothies if we want cold and sweet.
I love that Orville Redenbacher’s SmartPop! is a healthy choice for an afternoon snack. An entire bag of popcorn (7 1/2 cups) is only 240 calories. Since we all share one bag we are adding less than 100 calories to our daily intake with this snack. Oh, plus its 94% fat free. Love it!
I guess it helps that we all love popcorn so it makes it easy to incorporate it into our daily snacks. Besides the health benefits I appreciate that it can be popped up in a matter of minutes AND it doesn’t require me to dirty any dishes. Actually, I think the popup bowl container is the best thing ever! I love not having to dirty any dishes for our afternoon snack.
