washer in mid repair–yes, we have very hard water here, hence all the yellow staining
<rant>The last few months it seems like one thing after another has been breaking around here. A couple months back the washer broke. Between youtube and a twitter friend I was able to fix it myself. Thank goodness because I didn’t really have money to call the repair person. My daughter was pretty impressed that I handled it myself. Actually, I think I impressed myself. I don’t usually have to deal with home repairs, but Alan wanted to call someone in and I disagreed. So, I fixed it myself.
The other day Em turned on the shower and the faucet handle snapped off in her hand. Seriously?? Water is running, we have no way to turn it off or adjust the temp. Um, now what??? I found a screwdriver that would allow me to move the remaining piece around that allowed me to turn it off. Whew..close call. However, now we can’t find a replacement handle and we are kicking it redneck using a wrench (oh lord, did I just admit that). Our shower/tub is so old it means a completely tear out to fix the handle. I about cried.
The oven is on the fritz, the fridge is making a funny noise and now the washer isn’t spinning our clothes completely. Holy crap. I started wondering if there were any affordable home warranties out there that would cover all my home repair woes. Oh, and I forgot to mention that our roof needs to be replaced next spring. Do y’all have any idea how much it costs to reshingle a roof?? It is crazy expensive. I feel like I’m drowning in home repair costs and I start to wonder the benefits of home ownership.
I guess I am going to have to stop traveling for a while until I can get some of my appliance in correct working order and save money for the roof. You have no idea how much that pains me. Somehow we’ll survive. I’ll be checking out youtube again and doing many of the repairs myself (I hope). I’ll be sure to post my success and failure to twitter as I go along. Be sure to follow me. It makes for good comic relief.
Oh, and by the way, I found American Home Shield for home warranties. Figured there had to be something for this situation. </rant>
What home repairs are you dealing with?

Cheers,

Glad you got it fixed yourself! Youtube is fantastic for that stuff.
I will say, I went through this last year. Washer, dryer, then dishwasher went out. I ended up having to buy all new appliances. I’ve never had something like that happen before!
We’re having the electrician here for 2 days wiring the barn and putting lights in my garage stall (hooray!!!!!). And the dryer and stove are acting up AGAIN. The new appliances are so shoddily made now. The repairman TOLD US they are built to fall apart completely in less than 7 years. What crap.
