How To Make This 2-Ingredient Homemade Applesauce
Homemade Applesauce Supplies
- Medium sized sauce pan,
- Sieve
- Slotted Spoon
- Freezer/Storage Containers
Here’s what my sieve looks like. I don’t even know if you can buy these anymore.
Alan’s aunt gave this to us a long time ago and she had used it for years so I really have no idea how old it is.
Still works perfectly for us. I would check thrift stores and yard sales to see if you can stumble across one.
Homemade Applesauce Ingredients
- Apples
- Water
- OPTIONAL: sugar & cinnamon
Homemade Applesauce Directions
STEP 1
Start with a nice selection of freshly picked apples. Be sure to rinse them off.
Step 2
Cut off any bad spots from the apples.
You don’t have to toss the entire apple just cut away the bruise.
The rest of the apple is good to eat.
Step 3
After you cut away the bad part, cut the apples into quarters.
Step 4
Add the quartered apples to a pan of boiling water.
You don’t need a lot of water in the pan. Maybe about a 1/4 of the way full.
You’re basically going to use this to soften the apples.
Step 5
Cover and cook the apples for approximately 10 minutes.
They need to be very soft, the softer the better.
Step 6
Using a slotted spoon remove the apples from the water and place in the sieve. Using the wooden dowel push the apples through the sieve.
Continue smashing the apples through the sieve until you are left with just peels, seeds, and stems. Clean this out between each batch of sauce.
Step 7
When you smash the apples through the sieve the sauce will stick to the outsides, be sure to scrape it down into your bowl of sauce.
My applesauce takes on a pink hue because I leave the peels on.
However, if you don’t like the color then you can peel the apples prior to cooking.
Continue until you have cooked and smashed all your apples.
Step 8
Add sugar, cinnamon or nutmeg to your taste. I leave mine plain and add later if needed.
Step 9
Let cool and place in storage containers.
If you are going to freeze your applesauce be sure to let it cool completely before placing in the freezer.
Yum, freshly made applesauce.

Wow – I’ve got to try this!
Don’t those apples have the most incredible smell? I’m going to have to take one of those apples with me to the orchard and find out what kind they are. They make such good sauce. Hope you’re enjoying the beautiful weather. It’s VERY warm up in the U.P. this week (and I packed for cold weather!)
