The Ark Wildlife Rescue

Saturday afternoon Emma, along with her friend L, and I drove to The Ark Wildlife Rescue (about an hour away). This was after the 4H volunteer event in the morning and the yard sale in the early afternoon.

This is the same place that we volunteered for the Disney Give A Day Get A Day Program. Our goal is to volunteer 2x a month. It’s not a lot, but with my schedule its the most I can squeeze in.

Right now northern Michigan is in the midst of newborn season so there is lots of work to be done at The Ark. We cleaned cages, fed baby birds, done laundry and dishes, but our favorite activity was feeding the fawns. They are less than a week old. When they get a bit older they will be moved to another area where they do not have any human interaction. All feeding will be done with a barrier between the fawns and the volunteers. We were pretty fortunate to be able to bottle feed them up close and personal. I had a little chat with them and told them to not play in the road and to beware of hunters come fall. These little guys were orphaned because their mom was hit by a car :(

Other animals currently residing at The Ark include:

  • Ground Squirles
  • Goslings
  • Swan
  • Turtles
  • Racoons
  • Bunnies
  • Birds
  • Chipmunks
  • Fox

We are looking forward to our work at The Ark.

Do you volunteer anywhere with your children? What do you like to do?

We don't usually. One time though we worked at a food bank. The kids loved it and we were sure we would go right back, but we never did. I think you're motivating me :)

Two times per month is awesome! A lot more than many people (including my family) do.
